THE METAL INSURGENCE TOUR 2005

Featuring: JON OLIVA'S PAIN, BEYOND FEAR (W/ TIM "RIPPER" OWENS) AND CHRIS CAFFERY'S FACES

JON OLIVA’S PAIN

Official Website

Steamhammer Records

Jon Oliva - Vocals, Piano, Guitar (Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Savatage, Doctor Butcher, Circle II Circle, Avatar (USA), Chris Caffery, Seven Witches)

Christopher Kinder - Drums (Circle II Circle)

John Zahner - Keyboard (Savatage, Circle II Circle)

Kevin Rothney - Bass, Backing Vocals (Circle II Circle)

Matt Laporte - Guitar (Circle II Circle, Last Things)

Jerry Outlaw- Guitars (The Genitorturers, Bogus Pomp, Money Shot)

Release: Chapter One: Tage Mahal - 2004, Steamhammer Records

JON OLIVA’S PAIN, the solo project of SAVATAGE founder and mountain king, JON OLIVA, features former members from CIRCLE II CIRCLE, guitarist Matt Laporte, keyboardist John Zahner, bassist Kevin Rothney and drummer Chris Kinder. Set list includes songs from ‘Tage Mahal’ and classic SAVATAGE tunes.

Forever writing songs, JON describes the music as “heavy Beatles meets Black Sabbath...you definitely hear the SAVATAGE influence...there's also a much heavier edge...”.

As most SAVATAGE fans already know, JON has always been plagued with the dilemma of trying to choose which songs to put on the next SAVATAGE record, simply because there has always been too many songs to put on 2 CDs, let alone one. Between the collaborations and the material JON writes on his own, this daunting task has often left great songs in the closet. Hence, "JON OLIVA'S PAIN"!

With the break between a new SAVATAGE recording and the 2003 TRANS-SIBERIAN ORCHESTRA tour, JON finally had the time to pursue the goal of bringing some of those songs to life. It was clear to him from the beginning that these songs were going to be a departure from the style and sound of the ‘Sava-records’ of the past, and that was truly the point.

In August 2005, JON OLIVA won the Hard Music Awards Lifetime Achievement Award held in Tampa, Florida. JON OLIVA has contributed some of metals most incredible and memorable music for over 20 years.

John Comprix - Guitar (Spawn, 13 Faces)

Dwane Bihary - Guitar (Missing Skin)

BEYOND FEAR, is the solo project of TIM “RIPPER” OWENS, the current singer of ICED EARTH and ex-JUDAS PRIEST frontman. The hard hitting metal outfit debuted at the 2005 Bravewords & Bloody Knuckles - Six Pack III in Cleveland, OH in May, 2005. The band has recently signed with SPV and is planning on entering the studio to record their debut album for a 2006 release.

"It feels great to sign with SPV," OWENS commented. "I have been with them for quite some time now with Iced Earth, so I know what they can do. It is always nice to have a label that makes you feel like family, and that's what SPV does for you!"

The band is off to a fast start, having recently announced their participation in a series of American dates with SAVATAGE leader JON OLIVA (JON OLIVA'S PAIN) and SAVATAGE axeman CHRIS CAFFERY. The tour kicks off on September 9, 2005 in Cleveland OH.

Never one to sit still for long, OWENS began forming BEYOND FEAR last year during breaks in the ICED EARTH touring schedule. The band also features John Comprix on lead and rhythm guitar, Dennis Hayes (ex-Winters Bane) on bass, Dwane Bihary on rhythm guitar, and drummer Eric Elkins. "This band means a lot to me and I'm having the time of my life doing it," continued OWENS. "It's fun when you finally get to do what you want. That being said, let's get this machine called BEYOND FEAR out there for the world to hear and see."

SPV Managing Director, Manfred Schuetz, explains, "Tim is one of the 5 best singer’s in metal. He will deliver an album that will convince everyone. SPV is excited about the worldwide commitment."

CHRIS CAFFERY’S FACES

Official Website

Black Lotus Records

In support of his latest CD, titled W.A.R.P.E.D, which is scheduled for North American release through Black Lotus Records on September 27, 2005.

Chris Caffery - Vocals, Guitar (Savatage, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Doctor Butcher)

Jeff Plate - Drums (Savatage, Trans-Siberian Orchestra)

Ira Black - Guitar (Vicious Rumours)

Paul LaPlaca - Guitar, Keyboards (October Thorns)

Nick Douglas - Bass (Doro)

April 28, 2005 marked the debut live performance for CHRIS CAFFERY'S FACES, a dynamic variety of hard rock and heavy metal, with a recent follow-up CD entitled “W.A.R.P.E.D”. JON OLIVA makes a guest appearance on the song “Iraq Attack” on the “W.A.R.P.E.D.” CD. The band recently toured Europe with METAL CHURCH.

CHRIS CAFFERY is also a lead guitarist and Master of Ceremonies of THE TRANS-SIBERIAN ORCHESTRA. This multi-platinum act also breathed first life from the SAVATAGE family tree. The hit song "Christmas Eve 12/24" was originally recorded for SAVATAGE's "Dead Winter Dead" CD. TSO has since sold over 4 million CD's. The last TSO tour had sold over 530,000 tickets and was highlighted by a sold out performance at Madison Square Garden.

CHRIS joined the legendary SAVATAGE family back in 1987 when he was 19 years of age.

His first solo album, “Faces”, shows all the facets of his musical life. CHRIS’ first solo album delivers splendid versatile compositions with ultimately catchy hooks, ranging from ultra-heavy explosions to psychedelic slow songs, bluesy tunes and thrilling crossover (nu) metal anthems, powerful, with a distinctive progressive and personal touch, packed with discreetly added sound gimmicks all over the place.

Undoubtedly the biggest surprise of “Faces” is CHRIS’ strong, rough voice and his amazing vocal variations. Not bad for a guy, who has been facing the job of a lead vocalist for the very first time in his life! His spectrum ranges from aggressively barked aggro shouting to clean melodic singing with lots of experiments in between.

To set up interviews with Chris Caffery (Faces & T.S.O.) for US tour dates, please contact Maria Abril of Triquetra Media Services at maria@triquetramedia.com

Rehab For Quitters

New samples available here.

Track listing:

Skullight
the Cheese
What Time Is it Suicide?
Strung out
Slicked Back Hair (I Don’t Care)
Running Away
Punk Rock Girl
Jack in Her Box
Home Wrecker
Captain Obvious

BIO:
Punk Rock has come a long way since it's inception in the mid-to-late 70's. While the original punk bands varied somewhat in terms of sound, they were united in their uncompromising attitude, do-it-yourself ethos and a sonic attack that prized energy and passion over technical skill.

These days, the meaning of the words Punk Rock are not as clear. High-energy pop bands with stylist-created spiky hair masquerade as punk, but crack through the perfectly groomed exterior and you'll see it's all bubble-gum on the inside - just one choreographed step away from the boy bands of the 90's. On the other end of the spectrum are bands that wave the punk banner proudly - sincere, hard-edged and true to punk's original attitiudes. They've got the dedication and energy, but too often sacrifice melody and hooks in the pursuit of "punk purity".

Enter Rehab For Quitters, the perfect antidote for disillusioned punk rock fans who are tired of bubble-gum pop cynically marketed as rebellion. Sonically, they're loud, fast and aggressive. But get this, their songs have plenty of hooks and memorable sing-along choruses, and their stripped-down guitar, bass and drum attack combines ferocity and technical skill. Clearly, whoever decided punk is best served either bubble-gum lite or battery-acid heavy didn't send these guys the memo. Like their name suggests, they're sonic rehabilitation for those thinking of "quitting" the punk scene.

Having formed just over a year ago, these three young men from Toronto - Dan Lobalsamo on vocals and guitar, and brothers Matt and Chris Gee on drums and bass, respectively have already made a loud impression on the local scene. They've played dozens of shows, including gigs at the Reverb, Kathedral, El Mocambo, Club 279, a very well attended show at Dundas Square, The Molson Indy yearly auto racing event, and even opening for major acts such as The Dickies, Agent Orange and The Misfits.

But even before their first gig, the buzz had already started - working out some songs in a local rehearsal space one day, they sounded so loud and so good that a few people dropped by to ask them if they had any CDs for sale! This incident confirmed their suspicions - that they had real chemistry and a distinct sound that set them apart. From that day on, they've been completely focused on one thing: assaulting as many eardrums as possible with their unique brand of loud, fast rock and roll. And they'll let nothing stand in their way: at one show, Dan was so sick with the flu that he could barely stand up or see straight, but that didn't stop them from putting on one of their most memorable performances yet.

As songwriters, they've amassed an impressive body of work in a short amount of time. Their aptly titled 6-song demo EP, Leave 'Em Wanting More, proved to be a good indication of their strengths as a band. It was fast, loud, uncompromising Rock and Roll, with lyrics that run with gamut from heartfelt to humorous to in-your-face aggression. While the influence of bands such as The Misfits and Ramones can be heard, they have not been afraid to branch out and shades of 60's vocal groups like the Shangri-Las can be heard in tracks like Punk Rock Girl. This demo, however, was just a snapshot of a band progressing and developing at a breakneck pace.

More recently, they have been in the studio with Dan Turcotte recording their debut album. Mixing is complete and mastering has begun!

Rehab For Quitters chew up and spit out a myriad of sounds and styles faster than some bands can tune their guitars, while always sounding like themselves. Additionally, they'll continue to play as many gigs as humanily possible. Don't miss the chance to see their explosive live show!!

OGIE DAWG TAKES THE PENETRATOR DRUM THRONE

PENETRATOR welcomes drummer OGIE DAWG to PENETRATOR'S DRUM THRONE.

Recently coming off tour with Buddy Guy's Legends, OGIE DAWG steps back into his metal roots. Influenced by a lifetime of heros, Tommy Aldridge, Neil Peart, Joey Krammer and John Bohnam, OGIE is a true hard hitter from Toronto.

Original drummer, Simon Vanderzand, who recorded PENETRATOR's demo Unleash The Fury in his studio, The Sound Lounge, departed from the band to pursue his passion in the pop-punk genre.

In April 2005, OGIE entered PENETRATOR's realm of insane song writing, learning 23 songs and writing 3 new ones with the band...so far...

OGIE's first show with the band will be on Tuesday, July 12 in Toronto opening for fellow power metal band METAL CHURCH at The Reverb, 651 Queen Street West.

PENETRATOR also plays the AGGRESSION SESSION in St. Catherines, Ontario at L3, 6 James Street on August 13 and Thunder Bay, Ontario's WAR ON THE SHORE 2005 on August 27.

ENDORPHINS
Official Website
Fan Site
Endorphin's Forum

Toronto's aggressive death metal band ENDORPHINS will be heading into Chemical Sound Studios on July 16 with producer Ian Blurton (C'mon, Bionic, Blurtonia) to record their first full length album. 11 Tracks have been selected for the new album, some old ones and some news ones... "Rise & Fall", "the Dead Man" and lots more.

BIOGRAPHY:

Rob - Bass
Toonz - Guitar
Patrick - Drums
Michael - Guitar & Vocals

Friends since grade school, Michael and Patrick, formed ENDORPHINS in 1995. They started as a cover band jamming on everything from Nirvana and Green Day to Metallica and Smashing Pumpkins. Over the next few years there would be a few line-up changes (mostly on bass), but the two mainstays were Michael on guitar and vocals and Patrick on drums. ENDORPHINS appeared in many shows in Toronto at the time, including The Opera House, The El Mocambo and the infamous Gasworks. During that time, the boys began to write their own songs and even record them whenever an eight track recorder or their high school's recording studio was available. In August of 1996 another old friend of the boys joined the group, Mike "Toonz" Antunes. The band's line-up was finalized in 1997 with the addition of bass player Rob Amaral, Michael's older brother. They continued playing shows in Toronto and won their high school battle of the bands.

ENDORPHINS were still playing covers but also started to write their own material with each new song they got heavier and louder. The band kept evolving while listening to much more aggressive music like The Haunted and Slayer, and mixing in the classics like Black Sabbath.

In late 2001, ENDORPHINS knew it was time to either make a record or stay as a garage band. The decision was easy, make an album and be taken seriously. The boys were lucky enough to work with Producer Ian Blurton (Change of Heart, Bionic, Blurtonia) at Chemical Sound Recording in the spring of 2002.

Despite a tight budget, everyone worked hard to get this record done in four days. "Volume One" has only six tracks, but each one has its own vibe, a little bit of everything that ENDORPHINS has to offer.

Since its release, the album has had many favorable reviews and air play on college and university radio, plus Distribution in Canada and western Europe. ENDORPHINS played regularly in support of their record through the summer and fall of 2003.

The band has been writing songs for the full length album. The new songs are more aggressive, more melodic, loud, heavier and better then anything they've ever written before.

Plans are in the works to tour Canada and USA in support of their forthcoming album.

BIOGRAPHY:

SEX SLAVES are:
ERIC 13: vocals & guitar
DEL CHEETAH: bass & vocals
J-BOMB: big drums

Websites: www.sexslavesnyc.com, www.myspace.com/sexslaves

It was 2003. New York City. Lower East Side.
Eric13, singer, guitarist and a rock community mainstay from Philly strolled into 3 of Cups bar with a burlap bag and a roll of duct tape. He was starting a band, and the elusive bassist Del Cheetah would be his first accomplice. Twenty minutes later in the rehearsal room, Eric13 spoke to the dazed Mr. Cheetah: "Guess what- you're in the f*cking SEX SLAVES".

They began to write songs based on their experiences; music that reflected their identity, their influences, their way of life - something every boy and girl could relate to. The SLAVES released their first full-length debut "Nikki" in in the US and on Japan's Wizzard in Vinyl label. The initial pressing disappeared almost instantly, so by popular demand they soon followed it with a live album, "Pull The Trigger", on Germ Music. The line-up was finalized with the addition of drummer and New York band kid, J/Bomb. They were lean, mean and professional.

Three US tours and two Japanese tours solidified the SEX SLAVES' reputation as the toughest, baddest and hardest working band in NYC. Drawing on influences like the Misfits, Dead Boys, The Cult, Sex Pistols, Guns 'N' Roses, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, and one of the original musical outlaws, Hank Williams, the SLAVES took their music to the masses, playing venues all across the country from CBGB's to LA's Viper Room and a memorable performance on opening night at Slamdance in Salt Lake City, Utah. They caught the attention of several American and Japanese publications, as well as rock icons Gene Simmons, C.C. DeVille, Davey Havoc and Lemmy Kilmister. When asked about his new favorite bands, Motorhead's Lemmy was quoted in UK's music magazine "The Big Cheese" as saying, "I saw a good band called SEX SLAVES from New York - they were pretty good'.

SEX SLAVES created their brand new album, "Bite Your Tongue", with producer Ray Martin at Shelter Island Studios in New York City. With songs like "We're Goin' Out Tonight", "See You Naked", "One More Night", "Thank God For Jack Daniel's", "2am", "Kiss Me", "All Night Long", and a cover of the Iggy & the Stooges classic track, "Search & Destroy". Fans can instantly relate to the SEX SLAVE lifestyle.

No one can be prepared for the all-out rock 'n' roll experience that is SEX SLAVES. Just see them live. Once they take the stage, these three boys from NYC become everyone's favorite. Blood, sweat and booze pour out of the SLAVES at every show. Their killer songs keep the crowd involved; the connection they share with their fans is undeniable. They sing about girls, girls, girls, raw lyrics, with girls screaming in the front row...screaming their heads off for more.

SEX SLAVES. It's not just music. It's a f*cking balls-out rock 'n' roll movement.

Biography:

Flo Mounier Official Website
Cryptopsy Website

Born in France in 1974, Flo Mounier moved to Chicago 7 years later, where at the age of 13 the ground work was laid and his drumming career started with drum teacher Tony Castelli. A year later, and now in Montreal, he continued to gather ammunition and to develop his skills. His hard work paid off as he soon became one of the most recognized drummers within the metal scene.

Drummer for the band Cryptopsy, he has toured Canada, Europe, Japan and the United States as a headlining act over the last 6 years, and combined record sales have reached over 250,000 copies to date. Wherever Flo has played, his reputation remains the same; he combines great chops with blistering speed and technical brutality. Add this to an open mind approach that embraces different musical genres, and Flo has developed an even greater ability to enhance the creative edge within his unique phrasing.

Having studied with the likes of Magella Cormier and now part-time teacher Bruno Roy, his exploration of the Latin/Jazz approach has added an originality to his style which sets him apart from the rest. Flo's speed and precision apply to his live performances as well, and his playing continues to get even faster and tighter. His delivery and execution of complex fills at abnormal speeds will leave no one feeling indifferent. His drum kit is one of the most impressive kits in the world, with a custom rack created by Redge (Rene) Adolph.

Flo's style is the example to follow for the new generation of drummers who wish to find out more on what the discipline of extreme drumming is all about.

Flo’s forthcoming Instructional Drum Video (Tape and DVD) is a well documented experience in extreme metal drumming will cover such topics as warm ups, basics of speed drumming, endurance exercises, techniques, creative rhythms, and much more including different drum solos and play along segments for some of Cryptopsy’s most popular songs and bonus material. When you think of a good, classic representation of heavy metal, and I’m talking Priest, Saxon, Overkill or Gamma Ray, what picture do you draw in your mind? If you’re a veteran of the genre, a stack of Marshalls ought to float to you automatically, as synonymous to the pure metal musician as a laptop is to the business traveler. Roasted and ridiculed by younger, jaded audiences with no appreciation for where their scene derives from, the sight of a wall of speakers with a flailing Fender or Flying V is so Michael Schenker, so Ace Frehley, so Tony Iommi, so goddamn right.

When I talked with Toronto’s Penetrator, bassist David Green called to mind the time he met his new bandmates when they invited him for a tryout. What he found were racks of Marshalls heaped in the basement of this up-and-coming power metal band that was already drawing curious hoverers from the streets outside their practice space. “I was blown away,” Green notes in deference to the alluring hardware, and with his new colleagues, vocalist Maxel Black, Bess Ross on guitar and Simon Vanderzand on drums, this Canadian muscle unit have been dogging their scene with such perseverance their hard work is about to pay off with a recording deal in 2005 with Sonic Age Records and the release of their debut album, Penetrator (formerly entitled "Unleash the Fury").

From the opening riffs of the title track, you’re wont to think Armored Saint or Racer X. “Spread the Mind” has part Anthrax, part Sabbath kitsch, while the grinding “Guns and Whiskey” practically throws alms in Sabbath’s direction. There’s a good reason for this, as Bess Ross is former roadie to none other than Tony Iommi. Iommi’s influence can be heard in Ross’ magnificent playing, which is not to say Ross is carbon copy. With his classic Fender/Marshall setup, he energetically strums and wails where appropriately, knowing when to pull back and when to, if you’ll forgive the pun, unleash the fury. As the acceptance of guitar solos is creeping slowly back into favor, Ross may well become one of those underground figureheads often talked about in metal circles like Nick Bowcott of Grim Reaper or Bobby Gustafson back in the day.

“Muso in a Bottle” is a slinky ditty that may be Penetrator’s claim to fame at this point in their early career. Set by the Days of the New-like acoustic-driven verses, the Scorpions-esque power pop chorus glues itself onto the brain, and had it been released in the 80s, it might’ve been considered a lost classic.

Vocalist Maxel Black weaves a web of varied pitches, even hitting octaves in King Diamond’s league at times, such as on “Shock Therapy.” In the manner in which his vocals are presented on Unleash the Fury, one can tell he rages live, and as Penetrator has now signed with Sonic Age, Black’s potential will undoubtedly be corralled and refined, and he should be downright lethal as time progresses. Bringing a pop punk background to the mix, drummer Simon Vanderzand (who also handled the engineering chores on this disc) abandons any trace of those roots and delivers completely solid metal licks. “I was always into the heavier stuff like White Zombie and Pantera,” Vanderzand notes. “That’s kind of why I got out of it,” he says, referring to his previous work.

Penetrator runs a gamut of speeds on this disc, from the conventional power grind of “Adulteress” and “Wheels of Justice” or the Maiden-like “Templars of Hate,” to the thrashy “Shock Therapy” and the balls-out “Penetrator.” As Maxel Black notes, “We go from heavy to thrash, we’re all over the place. It’s not like we’re trying to find our sound. It just happens.” Bess Ross adds, “We put a lot of emotion out there. We don’t hold back, we’re loud and powerful.”

Penetrator is a band quickly on the move.

Trent Radio Review
First of all I'd like to state that IHS have basically been one of my favourite bands since I first saw them play a Halloween show years ago at the 477, when they all dressed in preppie yellow sweaters and Dee was the bassist at the time and some other dude was on drums... basically they have evolved more and more over the past few years than a lot of other Ontario bands I'm familiar with; from their 1st demo to their latest disc, these guys are clearly one of the best up and coming heavy bands in Ontario.

Clean Up The Blood - the new version with Dee on vocals is just as brutal and precise as the original, though I think this one is definitely a lot better. You can definitely hear a marked difference between the original and the new one, and obviously it's a good difference.

Hand That Beats Us Down - this new song shows the serious carcass and maiden influences that IHS embody. The riffs on this track make me want to sail to Norway and burn a church, then eat a taco. The breakdown around 3:35 is totally sludgetastic, and I don't normally like a lot of stoner metal but I'm loving the thickness of the guitar tone here.

Transparent Hearts - Where the last track leaves us, this one picks up REALLY quickly and goes straight into some fresh metal shredding. Dee's vocals fit the song perfectly; it's pretty obvious that she can growl with the best, and as the song builds itself into a fury of guitars and growling it becomes more and more evident that IHS have left their old punk roots in a dirty bag full of misfits shirts.

The Plague - Now I'm sure some people here have heard this track, which I've been playing religiously on the radio. Everything is on point here, there's not a single part that isn't good. From the killer riffs to the drums to the bass, the entire song owns all. Marc and Ben's backup vocals are perfect additions and it makes me happy that they still do vocs from time to time. The breakdowns are placed perfectly and at around 2:20 things heat up into an orgy of sound. This song literally makes me want to punch things.

Iron Fist (live) - This live version of my favourite IHS tune sounds pretty fucking good and shows that these guys are not a studio band in the least. I guess with Dee doing all the vocs I won't have to run up on stage as I have numerous times in the past, but heck, judging from the crowd yelling it's evident that they don't need me... and I couldn't care less cause they rock. At 7:55 minutes long this song is epic and Dee's added "fuck shit up" choruses add to the killer breakdown that only a band like IHS could pull off. The last minute and a half pretty much echo just how great these dudes are live.

In The Name Of Democracy (live) - Again, another live track (I think these were recorded in Oshawa) from the sickness of the ages album. This one definitely gets the blood pumping, and it's easy to tell that the band have great lyrics, which too many metal bands sorely lack these days. Both live songs sound great, and it's cool to hear them as the last live IHS stuff I heard was circa 2001 from the 477 and it sounded like it was recorded on a fisher price tape recorder.

Basically everyone should go buy this, you won't be disappointed in the least. The cd is on Dogbus Music.

TheShwa.com Review
“Wanna trade punk shows?” A phrase that will always stick in my head. It was the subject line of an email from Marc of I Hate Sally. That was more than 4 years ago now and was the first time I had ever heard of I Hate Sally. A day I would not soon forget. For one reason or another I missed the first few shows they played in Oshawa and I was more and more eager to see them with every missed show.

The day finally came in January of 2003 when I saw them sharing the stage with the Mudmen and Chuck Calibre at Catch 22 in Oshawa. At the time they were a 4-piece band. An understatement would be to say that I was blown away. The amazing 30 minute set left me craving more. Immediately following their set I rushed over to their merch table (manned by Dan) and I bought “The Sickness of the Ages Promo Disc” (it was $4 and I wanted more beer) which would be the first in my collection of I Hate Sally’s awesome releases. After that show I promised myself that I’d make sure never to miss another local performance, since then I never have.

A while after that I picked up “Sickness of the Ages” their full length album released in 2003. An album that to this day I subject the local residents of Oshawa to on an almost daily basis as it blasts from my car at bleeding-ear-decibel-levels.
Last year I heard rumours that they’d brought on board a new vocalist. I’ll be honest I was a little worried that my all time favourite Canadian metal band may have completely changed their sound. It was a common topic of conversation among the local group of I Hate Sally fans. “Has anyone heard their new singer yet?, “is it true that their new singer is a girl?”, none of which anyone had answers to at the time. Then the day came, on the I Hate Sally website (www.ihatesally.com) it was announced that Dee Prescott formerly of Chubbie, and a former bassist of IHS had now taken over the vocal duties.

A short time later I got wind of a show in Peterborough at the Trasheteria with Maximum RnR and F.A.T.O. With the prospect of seeing 3 of my favourite bands in one night I hopped into the car and made my way up the HWY115.

IHS hit the stage and shred through their set, my jaw was on the floor the entire time. I’ve never heard such amazingly gut wrenching vocals come out of a female vocalist. I mentioned earlier that I was afraid that IHS had changed their sound, well they had… for the better. They were so amazing that night that they converted a metal hating friend of mine from Peterborough into a front-row-head-banger after only a few songs. I head back to Oshawa with my news that IHS were better than ever. Some pessimism still lingered in a few of the hardcore metal fundamentalists stating that “there’s no way some chick can scream as well as Marc”. My only reply was “Go to the show, you’ll eat your words. Dee is amazing”. I followed up with them all after IHS’ first show with Dee at the Dungeon in Oshawa and the consensus was unanimous I Hate Sally are playing tighter and with more energy than ever!

Then the news came that I Hate Sally would be returning to the studio to record some brand new songs and some old favourites with the new line-up. It has been a really long time since I’ve looked forward to an album as much as I was looking forward to this one. Early in February we got a little taste of what was to come, an un-polished, un-mastered version of title track (at the time was still untitled) was released for download on ihatesally.com, it was nothing less than incredible. I was even more excited to hear the finished product.

Just before the band left on their “East-Coast Fish Batter tour” an announcement came from the dungeon’s website (www.thedungeon.ca) that they’d be holding a double CD release party for I Hate Sally (releasing “the Plague” ep) and Chuck Calibre (releasing their new full length album “six the hard way”) on March 18th.

Everyone here in the Shwa was so eagerly awaiting the show and wanted hear the new songs live that when I Hate Sally hit the stage the place seemed to explode and a pit broke out almost immediately. It’s obvious that Marc is enjoying his relief of vocal duties as he’s able to get a lot more mobile and tends to shred riffs balancing on the edge of his stack a lot more often. The whole band seems to be a lot more mobile on stage, their new line-up seems to have brought them a lot more confidence and they seem much more comfortable on stage then they did that very first time I saw them years ago. They screamed, shred, and growled their way through the remainder of their set and left everyone in the place begging for more. That was the night that I finally got my hands on “The Plague”. It went directly into my CD player as soon as I got home that night and the 6 tracks blasted until the sun came up.

The Plague starts off with a low volume flickering sound that builds up to the new recording of “Clean Up The Blood”, an even heavier version of one of their most popular songs. Dee definitely makes her presence known with her insidious signature growl. “Hand That Beats Us Down” burst in next with a slight drum into to an incredible synchronized riff that makes you want to jump out of your seat and destroy something. It’s obvious that the guitars are a lot tighter on this release. Their new material is a lot more riff heavy than their older stuff and the entire band seems to be putting a lot more work in to their music and it shows. “Transplanted Hearts” seems to have a slight punk feel under all that screaming metal. Nick’s drums are absolutely amazing on this album and there are much more to the drum tracks on this album then there were on “sickness of the ages”. Title track “The Plague” is the last of the studio recorded tracks and it’s the perfect completion. It sums up in one song all of the best things about I Hate Sally, and showcases perfectly all the results of their hard work and everything they’ve emotionally poured into this recording.

As if to prove to everyone that they’re even better than ever live, they included two live tracks. “Iron Fist”, and “In The Name of Democracy” these are some great sounding live recordings as far as live recordings go. Play these songs for someone whose never heard of I Hate Sally and it’s almost certain that they’ll HAVE to see them live.

If I had to come up with something about this album that I didn’t like, it would have to be the mastering. Though it’s decent, it’s sonically not as good as the mastering on “Sickness of the Ages”. “The Plague” is a rawer, minimalist, sounding release.

All things considered and taken into account (that’s how I’m supposed to end something like this, right?). It’s an amazing album from one of the most talented bands performing in Canada right now. This is definitely a must have for anyone that’s into Metal, Thrash, Hardcore, Punk, Independent, or just anyone that loves good music.
